Last Tuesday, Bryn Mawr’s badminion team faced off against the Bryn Athyn College (the Academy of the New Church), posting a 4-1 win.
The Mawrters were paced by senior Nicole Boehner, who trounced her opponent 11-2, 11-6 en route to a victory in the number one singles slot. Freshman sensation Alice Gugelmann (third singles) was also victorious, winning 11-7, 11-0. Guglemann remains undefeated this season. Double teams, Rachel Tickton/Jihean Lee (15-9,15-1) and Botum Chhay/Alex Glanz-Berger 15-10, 15-8) won both their matches.
Just five years ago, the Bryn Mawr varsity badminton team brought home the National Collegiate Championship, and last season the squad sent four players to the National Collegiate Tournament.
With the players from the championship season now gone, along with six seniors graduating last year, a strong group of freshmen rookies and a talented group of upperclassmen have stepped up and are looking to continue Bryn Mawr’s tradition of excellence in badminton.
With a strong showing early in the season, it already looks as though this season will be a successful one for the Mawrters. Bryn Mawr faces Swarthmore at home on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Schwartz Gymnasium in what looks to be a fierce tri-co battle.
