BOSTON - Haverford alumnus and nine-time NCAA Division III champion Karl Paranya ’97 ran the second fastest split (1:48.31) of a world and American-record 4×800-meter relay Sunday at Boston’s Fleet Center. The team, consisting of Joey Woody (1:49.34), Paranya, Rich Kenah (1:48.48) and David Krummenacher (1:47.81) held off Santa Monica TC to set new world and U.S. marks (7:13.94) by a four-second margin.

The Soviet Union (7:17.8) set the previous international 4×800 standard in Sofia, Bulgaria on March 14, 1971. The old American record was set by the University of Florida (7:18.23) at the NCAA championships in Indianapolis on March 14, 1992. Mixed teams of U.S. and non-U.S. runners from Clemson (7:17.45) and George Mason (7:17.77) Universities also had faster converted 4×800-yard relay times when finishing first and second at the NCAA meet on March 11, 1989.
