Duo Alterno at Haverford

By Ben Porten

Duo Alterno, made up of pianist/composer Riccardo Piacentini and vocalist Tiziana Scandaletti , performed at Marshall Auditorium this Tuesday. This was not the first time that they have come to Haverford, and one can assume that their performance of the piece, "Due canti brevi," written by Haverford College Professor Curt Cacioppo especially for them, means that they have built quite a rapport with the music department.

The audience was seated on stage, within spitting distance of the performers. A few sticklers stayed in the rowed seating of the auditorium, but those party poopers were ignored and the fun times continued regardless.

Duo Alterno played "Gian Francesco Palipiero" from “I Sonetti delle Fate” arranged by Riccardo Piacentini and Jiang Su Jen in 2008. Then, they performed "Deux chansons anciennes" which was written by Alfredo Casella in 1913. And then, Duo Alterno played "La rinnovazione [dell'abbonamento al Fanfulla]," which was made by Francesco Paolo Tosti in 1875. Afterwards, they played "L’ultima canzone" (not to be confused with the Ultimate Calzone!).

There was supposed to be an intermission, but Riccardo powered on through after checking with the crowd if that would be okay. It was okay. Duo Alterno played a couple little ditties called "Trois Chansons de Bilitis," by Claude Debussy. They was written in 1899. The next composition they played was from "Préludes (Deuxieme Livre),” written 14 years later by Debussy. Afterwards, they did a piece from “Winterreise” by Franz Schubert, composed in 1827. Their last piece was Curt Cacioppo’s "Due canti brevi," from 2007.

When they finished their performance, everybody clapped. They bowed, and smiled, and left the stage. Then, they got back on stage, to bow and smile again. I’ve never really understood why musicians do this.
