Facebook has opened a new line of communication among members of Generation Y, but this modern convenience comes with a slew of privacy considerations.
Lloyd Around the World was an open event, meaning that law enforcement officials could view this event and all of its details, including time and place. The event was created by the “Lloyd 2010” Facebook group, and the party was to start at 10:00 p.m. Thursday and end at 2 a.m. Friday, according to the event page.
While the event page did not specify the types of drinks being served, the Lloyd 2010 group, which is only open to individuals who have registered Haverford e-mail accounts, contained a discussion thread which listed the different beverages offered by each Lloyd section. As of 7:30 a.m. Friday, 376 individuals said they would attend Lloyd Around the World.
The Outsiders
Of these who registered to attend Lloyd Around the World, 39 individuals did not set a Tri-College institution as their primary Facebook network. Given that some tri-co students may have kept their high school or other networks as their primary network, the number of attendees actually outside of the tri-college community is probably less than 39.
Seven out of the 17 posts on the event wall were written by users who were not registered members of the Facebook networks associated with Tri-College institutions. Five of these individuals outside the tri-college community claimed to have graduated in 2009 from Washingtonville High School in New York State, near Poughkeepsie. Oddly, their Facebook networks indicated associations with institutions such as the University of Rochester, Cornell University and SUNY Buffalo, but none of the Washingtonville graduates had any Facebook ties to Haverford—no networks, no mutual friends.
The Wall Posts
Postings on the event wall varied in content. Earlier on, one member of the bi-college community expressed her regret in not being able to attend the party: “wish i could be there as well, but alas, i am already around the world, across the atlantic [sic].” A couple of hours before people were going “around the world,” the Washingtonville graduates posted a series of energetic messages including: “im there… lets get readyyyy to partyyy hard at harvard!!!! YEAH MAN [sic]” and “Yo dis party gonna be zippity dippity [sic].” After tonight’s incident, users posted messages such as “9-3-2009 Never Forget.”
