Haverford Women’s Volleyball Clinches Second Centennial Tournament Birth in Three Years

By Katherine Dopulos

The Fords beat the Swarthmore College volleyball team last Wednesday night in three intense sets (25-17, 25-21, 25-20). With this win, the Fords clinched the second regular season Centennial Conference title in three years for Haverford women’s volleyball.

Haverford easily took the first set, with notable kills from Rebecca Salvo ’10 and Olivia Coburn-Flynn ’13. The second set was much closer, with Swarthmore tying four times and taking the lead once, but the Fords pulled ahead and won by four, finishing with a brilliant kill by Rachel Salvo ’10. While Haverford was on fire to start the third set and gained the first 10 points easily, Swarthmore gained strength and rallied to gain a three-point lead at 12-15. The Fords, however, quickly regained control and gracefully won the third set for a spectacular win.

Rebecca Salvo was kill leader with 16, followed by Kelsey Cantwell ’11 with 10 kills, and Olivia Coburn-Flynn with 9. Salvo and Cantwell also claimed two aces each. Assist leader was Kate Comey ’12 with 37. Dig leaders were Caitlin Tranquillo ’12 with 13, followed by Rebecca and Rachel Salvo, with nine and eight digs, respectively.

The Fords were undefeated at home during the regular season, with a record of 12-0. Their overall record stands at 27-3. They are the No. 25 ranked volleyball team in the Centennial Conference.

Winning the centennial title gives Haverford the opportunity to host the conference tournament on Nov. 7 and 8.
