Haverford Men’s Soccer Takes Close “L” to Swarthmore

By Stephen Handlon

Last Wednesday, the Fords were narrowly defeated by Washington College in a close game that ended in a 2-1 loss.
On Saturday morning, I was awakened by one of the Haverford Men’s Soccer Team’s amusing traditions: chanting “umm pah pah” and running through Barclay dorms. Excitement was high for Saturday’s game, the final game of the regular season. Despite the constant drizzle, the stands were filled with players coming out to support the team.
A pre-game ceremony honored Haverford seniors Chris Dioguardi, Brian Pepe-Mooney and Jeff Rickert, who played their last game on Walton Field. I would also like to congratulate them on a great season and for their illustrious careers at Haverford.
In the first twenty minutes, Swarthmore managed to score two goals. Haverford’s #10, Fernando Garcia‘11, scored Haverford’s first goal by knocking the ball into the left corner of the net. In the second half, Swarthmore managed another two points, bringing the final score to 2-4.
Emotions were running high as the two teams combined for seven yellow cards. Swarthmore’s #4, defender Arsean Maqami, apparently forgot what sport he was playing and was red-carded for bringing an elbow to the head of a Haverford player.
Towards the end of the game, Haverford #13, Chris Dioguardi ‘10 scored another goal with a nice assist from #23 Scott Cohen ‘12. Haverford goalkeeper #1 Jamey Applegate ‘11 managed an impressive five saves.
In the end of a tough game, the Ford’s were defeated 2-4, bringing the overall record to 6-11-0.
Haverford’s #18 Eddie Garcia’13 feels the season went well, saying, "We were incorporated into the team pretty well and are very fortunate to have such team-oriented captains.”
The game also wrapped up new head coach Bill Brady’s first season at Haverford. Haverford’s #27 Charlie Michele’13 explained that “as a freshman, the coach sets the precedent and he’s been fantastic in that regard. He’s been a great coach and brought a lot of professionalism to the team.”

Haverford Men’s Soccer has been steadily improving to be competitive in the Centennial Conference and Charlie adds, “We still have a lot of work to do, but the foundations are there for successful seasons to come.”
