At Sunday’s lightening-fast Self-Governance Association meeting, assembly members discussed student recruitment policies and SGA institutional memory.
During the announcements portion of the meeting, Amanda Darby ’10 and Naomi Hamermesh ‘10 said that they had been appointed as student representatives to the new Goodhart Steering Committee.
“We’re here," said Darby. "We’re working for you guys.”
Next was a brief discussion of the student recruitment policy. It was announced at a previous SGA meeting that Bryn Mawr is currently recruiting students of a higher socio-economic background that are more likely to be able to pay full tuition.
“We got a statement from Jenny Rickard, who was the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid [and is now the Chief Enrollment and Communications Officer]," said SGA President Emma Wisniewski-Barker ‘11.
The statement included, “Even when the economy is stronger, we are very aware that an investment of $50,000 per year for a private, liberal arts education is one that families consider very carefully. Because 50 percent of the college’s revenue is derived from tuition and fees, it is important for the college to convey clearly the great value and competitive advantages.”
Wisniewski-Barker told those gathered about a conversation she had with Dean Tidmarsh regarding recruitment.
Wisniewski-Barker stated, “Something she [Tidmarsh] told me is that Bryn Mawr has historically been very attractive to students of a lower socio-economic status…and that we’ve always struggled to get of a higher socio-economic status.”
The president specifically mentioned the problem of retaining students of a higher socio-economic status because such students do not need to worry about financial aid while transferring.
Wisniewski-Barker then began a discussion of working to improve institutional memory within SGA. A binder will be created for each individual position to keep a sense of continuity after each round of elections.
Finally, the assembly discussed the yearbook.
“Last time, we decided we did not want to go with the same company for the 2010 yearbook,” said Wisniewski-Barker.
She is looking for volunteers for a “very informal committee” to explore other options.
“We want to get this rolling as soon as possible,” stated Wisniewski-Barker.
