A girl from northern New Jersey, trips to New York City were frequent and magical. Yankee games, Broadway shows, and museum trips with my family confettied my childhood, and for that I appreciate “the best city in the world.” For my purposes now, though, as a college student who can barely afford SEPTA tickets, Philadelphia is brimming with opportunities and character that jive with my needs.
The best thing about Philadelphia, without question, is the R5 Productions concert series. I have been able to see a solid twenty shows for the combined price of two Lil Wayne tickets. (That said, I would love to see Lil Wayne, but it’s hard to shell out $150 when you can see another fave for a fraction of that price.) The artists that perform at R5 shows range from small electro-core bands from Japan (?) to more established “indie rockers” to rappers; clearly, it leaves little to be desired.
Second best: Stephen Starr. Starr makes a point to create an ambience that matches the food, which in my experience has all been delicious. His establishments are a bit pricey, but for the high quality and fun experience, it is well worth the occasional treat (or parent visit). One of Capogiro Gelateria’s locations is across the street from Starr’s El Vez (gourmet guacamole, photo booth), which is an unbeatable juxtaposition. I have failed to find better gelato anywhere in America; Capogiro’s ingredients are fresh, seasonal, and intriguing with flavors like avocado, Thai coconut milk, honey lavender, and luxurious takes on the standards.
A selection of other Philly things I enjoy (or have enjoyed): the Magic Garden, the White Dog Café, City Hall, Philadelphia Community Acupuncture, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Olde City Tattoo, Naked Chocolate Café, and the Forum (jk).
Also, for real, the people of Philadelphia have treated me well. I took a class at the University of Pennsylvania last semester that left me on the Market-Frankford Line on Monday nights. Over the course of the semester, I became an actual member of the Monday evening commute, seeing the same people on the train, a few of which would continue their trip into the ‘burbs on the R100 headed towards Haverford. These people, unlike most New Yorkers, engaged me in conversation, asked about my future, inquired about my present, and were generally kind to me. Thanks, guys. And of course, it’s always sunny in Philadelphia.
