Bryn Mawr Swimmers Lose to F&M, Post Strong Times

By Mairin O’Connor

Despite the noticeably larger number of swimmers on Franklin and Marshall’s team, the Bryn Mawr Owls persevered and covered all of their races. They Owls opened the meet with a third-place finish in the medley relay, composed of Kathy De La Hoz ’13, Zoe Gustella ’13, Sarah Sherman ’11 and Mairin O’Connor ’13, only coming in two seconds behind the second-place finish of Franklin and Marshall with a time of 2:04.78.

“Our strategy for swimming F&M was to use the competitive swims for our own individual performances,” said Coach Nikki Whitlock.

“The beginning of the season is an important testing ground to see where our swimmers are beginning the season and feeling out different events to swim.”

Sophomore Kelsey Power swam the 1000-yard freestyle, placing third, the only Bryn Mawr swimmer among three Franklin and Marshall swimmers. All of the Owls were on deck cheering throughout this 40-lap race, displaying their team spirit and cohesiveness.

Although various swimmers on Bryn Mawr faced injuries, each one made it through for their team in order to best represent their team.

Captain Cea Weaver ’10 led the team in the 200-yard freestyle, keeping spirits up, as she finished second, with a time only one second behind the first place finish. This was also followed up by two top finishes from freshmen Meredith Davis ’13 and Guastella in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard Individual Medley. Davis finished second in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 25:96 and Guastella with one of 2:20.45. Both of these finishes placed the two freshmen in the all time top ten list of Bryn Mawr College’s history.

Additionally, Power rallied to touch out Franklin and Marshall for a second place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:05.13.

The Owls took home first and third in the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, respectively, leading up to a strong finish at the end of the meet. Cea Weaver took first in the 500-yard freestyle, Guastella took second in the 100-yard breastroke and the final relay came to a strong finish with third place.

For the 100-yard breastroke, swimmer Wanda Lee came in ten minutes before her race from an academic field trip. This did not stop her determination, as she finished with a time one second faster than she had previously posted.

“She showed the kind of dedication that one can only really dream for from a teammate,” Weaver said of Lee.

“This meet was really great as well, because we posted great times despite the fact that we swam tired from our practice the day before. I’m hoping that with the adrenaline of being at a new pool next week, people will post some really great times!”

Since the team has doubled in size from last year, the Bryn Mawr Owls are improving with each meet, gaining a lot of points.

“We will continue to focus on team and individual goals for our first half of the season and target our last home meet in the old pool on December 2 against Arcadia and Cabrini to really peak before the winter break” said Coach Whitlock.

As the season progresses, they are looking to improve their times, alongside their places with each meet.
