After a disappointing loss to Dickinson at last week’s Centennial Conference Championship, the men’s cross country team bounced back with speedy times on Friday evening. The Goats raced a 3200-meter time trial and recorded several personal records (PRs).
“The Derby proves that we have a talented group of guys who are in very good shape,” said captain Anders Hulleburg ’11. “As we found out last week, talent doesn’t automatically translate into racing well. All the pieces are there for us to go out there and compete; we just have to put everything together.”
After two Villanova runners up front, Joseph Carpenter ’11 was the first Haverford finisher, running 9 minutes, 11.4 seconds for 2-miles. Tim Schoch ‘12 and Chris Southwick ‘11, who recorded PRs of 9:14.1 and 9:14.9 respectively, were right on his tail.
“We ran well today, especially since we weren’t tapering for this race,” Southwick said. “We know we’re fit; we just have to perform as a team at the championship races.”
Ivo Milic-Strkalj ’13 was the first freshman for the Goats in 9:20.9. He inched Elias Tousley ’11 (9:21.2) at the finish line. Anders Hulleburg ’11, Andrew Lanham ’10, Eric Arnold ’12, Andrew Sturner ’12, Lucas Fuentes ’11, and Peter Kissin ’13 all managed to break 9:30.
“It worked out well having most of the varsity guys run in the Derby this year,” Arnold said. “It definitely helped us try to get sharper after Conferences.”
In Heat #2, Pat Haneman ’12 led the Goats with his 9:42.6. “I just tried to hang on,” Haneman said. “It was pretty crowded during the first mile, but I went with the leaders as the race started to string out.”
Ben Siqueiros ’12 was next with a time of 9:43.4. Three Goat freshmen—Dave Colletta ’13 (9:45.1), Mike Riccio ’13 (9:45.3), and Jacob Koffer ’13 (9:45.8)—were separated by just 0.7 seconds. Faraz Sohail ’12, Jack McNeilly ’13, Richard “Mumbles” Marsico ’10, and Ben Cutilli ’12 all added to the plethora of sub-10:00 Goat performances.
“Lots of guys were working very well together today,” Haneman said. “It was great to see so many Goats in the 9:40s in our race. We only had one guy run that fast in this heat last year.”
“Most guys ran PRs today,” Lanham said. “The team was solid as a whole, and is showing great depth.”
The varsity squad for the Goats—Hulleburg, Carpenter, Southwick, Lanham, Jordan Schilit ‘13, Schoch, and Sturner—will compete in the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional Championship on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 12:00pm.
“The solid performances today should help us regain confidence for next week,” Carpenter said. “We have the potential to be one of the best teams at Regionals.”
