Off to Nationals: Bees and Goats Each Take Third

By Jordan Schilit

Bees were buzzing for an NCAA Championship berth. And Goats were trotting toward revenge against Dickinson.

Those goals became realities on Saturday at the 2009 Mideast Regional Cross Country Championship.

Next stop for both squads: Cleveland, Ohio. They each snagged third-place finishes and will compete at Nationals on Nov. 21.

The Bees will be headed to the Big Dance for the sixth time in eight years. The Goats made it 17 consecutive years with this year’s qualification.

The Bees scored 146 points, behind Centennial Conference Champion Johns Hopkins with 109 points and Centennial Conference Runner-up Dickinson with 113 points. The men’s standings were even closer with the top four teams only separated by 31 points. With 83 points, Haverford trailed Allegheny’s 59 and Carnegie Mellon’s 69 points, but edged Dickinson by seven points.

Emily Lipman ’12 continued her quest for All-American honors with her second-place overall finish. Her time of 21 minutes, 44 seconds for six kilometers is a lifetime best.

Elizabeth Zoidis ’11 also had a standout performance as the other All-Mideast Region finisher for the women’s team. She placed 27th in 22:52 for 6k.

But the next three bees sealed the deal for Haverford. Alice Vienneau ’12 (23:22.9), Harper Hubbeling ’11 (23:23.2), and Andrea Tocci ’13 (23:23.6) were separated by just over one second. They finished in 38th, 39th and 40th place respectively.

Haverford’s next two finishers – Caity Tully ’11 and Kaitlyn Shank ’12 – were the fastest #6 and #7 runners for any team in the race. Tully recorded 23:42, which was good enough for 51st. Shank, only 10 seconds behind, placed 61st.

On the men’s side, Anders Hulleberg ’11 was the highest Goat finisher in sixth place. Only nine seconds – and three places – behind was Tim Schoch ’12, who finished in 25:23 for 8-kilometers. Chris Southwick ’11 was the next Goat to crack the top twenty, recording 25:37.

Haverford had three more finishers – Andrew Lanham ’10, Joseph Carpenter ’11 and Jordan Schilit ’13 – who broke 26:00 for 8k, only to be separated by four seconds. Andrew Sturner ’12 placed 32nd. The entire varsity Goat squad earned All-Mideast Region honors.

The Goats had the fastest #6 and #7 runners in the field of 42 teams.

The NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championship will be hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College at the Highland Hills Golf Club on Saturday. The women’s race will start at 11 a.m. The men’s race will start at 12 p.m.

The top four teams at the NCAA Championship will receive a podium award. The top thirty-five individual finishers will receive All-American honors.
