Bryn Mawr’s Deb Charamella earned her first victory as a head coach as Bryn Mawr tamed the Penn State-Abington Nittany Lions, 64-35, in the consolation game of the 2009 BMC Tip-Off Tournament.
The Owls got on the board first when Lindsey Darvin netted three of her 31 points of the day. Bryn Mawr pushed their lead to eight, 12-4, with 13:19 remaining in the opening stanza. Their largest lead of the half, 17-5, came with 3:33 to play when Darvin connected a jumper from inside the key.
Bryn Mawr held off a surging PSU-Abington as they scored eight of their 14 points in the final three minutes. The Owls took a 23-14 lead into the locker room at the half.
The second-half belonged to the Owls as they shot 50% from the floor and 87.5% from the free-throw line to outscore Penn State, 41-21. Bryn Mawr’s largest lead of the game, 36, came with 3:06 remaining following a jumper in the paint from Cassie Kosarek.
Darvin, who put up 18 points in Bryn Mawr’s season opener against Rosemont yesterday, bettered that effort by 13 against the Lions as the Owls rolled to even their season record at 1-1. Darvin is now tied with former teammate and current assistant coach Jess Allen for second all-time with 31 points scored in a game. She set a new school record with 16 free-throws made, knocking Amy Johnson’s 14 (Ursinus 1/22/2004) off the perch; she was 16-for-18 from the charity stripe.
Two other Owls reached double-digits as Emilie Naccarato and Shanika Bridges-King tallied 17 and 10 points, respectively. Bridges-King and Rudi Vanzin posted a team-high eight rebounds while Darvin and Caroline Heffernan snagged six boards from the glass.
The Nittany Lions were paced by Kerri Gallagher and Samantha Frick who posted eight points each. Elizabeth Hilbert grabbed a game-best ten rebounds.
The Owls return to the hardwood on Tuesday, November 24, when they host conference foe and archrival Haverford. Tip-off is set for 5:00 pm inside Schwartz Gymnasium.
The Immaculata University Mighty Macs won the 2009 Tip-Off Tournament by defeating Colonial State Athletic Conference foe Rosemont, 65-33, in the championship game.
