Head To Head: Library

By Julie O’Neil
Arts Editor

So today I slept until 2pm and then got up and watched "The West Wing" until I had to head to an editorial board meeting for this very paper. Other nights, I’ll decide it’s a good idea to re-read the Zac Efron "Rolling Stone" cover story. Trust me, at 3am it’s super interesting. All of this is to say, I get absolutely nothing done when I attempt to do school work in my room. That’s what Canaday Library is for. The largest of Bryn Mawr College’s libraries as far as physical size and number of volumes, Canaday also serves as a great study space. From the media lab in the basement to the Language Learning Center on the third floor to my own carrel, there are plenty spots where I can be a productive student.

There are many reasons behind my love for Canaday Library and all of its secret hiding spots. First, there’s the lack of distractions. There is no television for me to watch or snack for me to munch on or roommate dance parties to be had. Instead there’s just everything I need: computers, printers, and more books than I could read in a lifetime. At the very least, I’d have to go digging through the Rolling Stone archives to find Zac’s issue.

However, that’s not to say that Canaday Library is not a social environment. Its social atmosphere is actually another one of the reasons I enjoy spending time and studying there. It’s quiet, but never too quiet. I like that my friends are all around and can encourage me to keep working and make sure that I do not fall asleep as I read my 34th book on women in politics.

Finally, my last reason for loving Canaday Library is that as a senior, my very own carrel awaits me here. I’ve spent the last three years watching seniors before me have their own little nooks to store their stuff, stack their books, etc. While I didn’t exactly process that having a carrel meant writing a thesis, it’s still not a bad priviledge. It’s an absolute joy to not have to carry my dozens of books back and forth from the desk in my room to library. Plus, I picked one right across from the section where all my books are and can just hunker down there to read. No Zac. No West Wing. No sleeping until 2pm.
