Let’s face it: winter just wouldn’t be winter without basketball.
Last Wednesday the Haverford College men’s basketball tean earned an impressive win over Washington College in a Centennial Conference home match. After a tough match the Fords walked away with a 67-62 victory. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t continue its winning streak, later falling in a close game against Gettysburg College.
As always, the stands of Gooding Arena were filled with Haverford fans, happy to be out supporting men’s basketball. “It’s great to come and see all the excitement from the fans” said Nadia Yeracaris ’13.
Excitement was running high as screaming fans watched Haverford’s men’s basketball gain a six point lead in the first few minutes of the game and continue to gain on their visiting opponents.
However, a scoring streak by Gettysburg meant that the two teams were tied 10-10 at the half.
Gettysburg managed to pull ahead in the second half, with a second-half shooting percentage of over 50 percent, much of it thanks to Gettysburg junior Andrew Power’s 25 points. Additionally, Haverford never managed a 3-point shot, making a comeback difficult.
The game ended in a 43-58 loss.
Nevertheless, Haverford men’s basketball played well. Haverford fan Randee Johnson ’13 said she “liked to see the teamwork on the court.”
Especially impressive was the work of Sam Permutt ‘11 and Cam Baker ’13, who lead the way with 12 points each. Senior Doug Edelman scored another ten points for the Fords and had an impressive seven-rebound game.
Asked how the season was progressing, Edelman said, “we just got it put together; we have a lot of young guys trying to step up.” He assured fans that Haverford College would be a major threat in future conference matches.
Hopefully the Fords can regain their winning streak at their next game, a Wednesday-night match against Ursinus College.
