Haverford College hosted its annual Holiday Meet at the Alumni Field House on Saturday. Four meet records were rewritten by Fords and plenty of personal bests were posted.
The meet’s first race –- the 5,000-meters –- was swarmed with Goats. The men’s team secured eight of the top-10 places in that race, with Joseph Carpenter ’11 distancing the field in 15 minutes, 3.29 seconds. Anders Hulleberg ’11 was second overall in 15:08.93. They both broke the old meet record of 15:22.14.
Chris Southwick ’11 just edged teammate Faraz Sohail ’12 at the finish line – 15:36.42 to 15:36.43. They placed third and fourth respectively.
Andrew Sturner ’12, Peter Kissin ’13, and Pat Haneman ’12 were the remaining Goats to break the 16:00 barrier. With 13 Goats under 17-minutes, 11 managed to qualify for the Centennial Conference Championship.
In the mile, Ivo Milic-Strkalj ’13 led the charge with his 4:22.15. Sophomores Eric Arnold ’12 (4:25.06) and Ben Siqueiros ’12 (4:27.22) claimed second and third. Juniors Elias Tousley ’11 and Lucas Fuentes also broke 4:30. Michael Riccio ’13 was sixth overall in 4:33.34.
Tom Mahoney ’12 was the sole high jumper, but still managed a meet record of 1.85m (6 feet, 0.75 inches). James Torain ’13 won the long jump with 5.39m (17-08.25). Kahmai Martin-Kirkland ’12 won the shot put in 10.58m (34-08.50). Willie Xiang ’12 and Jacob Olshansky ‘12 placed third in the 400m and 800m, respectively.
On the women’s side, Zoe Welch ’11 was a clear highlight, capturing first place in three events. She won the 55m dash in a time of 7.70 seconds, cruised to the win in the 200 (27.36), and led a 1-2-3-4 sweep of the long jump with a winning leap of 4.78m (15-8.25).
Jackie Freund ’10 also had a very strong performance. Her winning toss of 11.64m (38-2.25) was the farthest for both women and men at the Haverford Holiday Meet. She broke her own meet record, which was set last indoor season.
Caity Tully ’11 won the women’s mile in 5:34.83, followed by Sara Hess ’13 (5:45.01).
Kimberly Carlomagno ’13 took first in the 400m with a time of 1:03.11. Kylie Lipinski ’12 (10.42m, 34-2.25) and Linsday Reid ’13 (9.08m, 29-9.5) went 1-2 in the triple jump. Aileen Keogh ’10 finished second in the 800m, and Mara Miller was second in the 55m hurdles and sixth in the 55m dash.
Next up for both track teams will be the first away meet of the season – the Gotham Cup – hosted by NYU on Jan. 15.
