Two groups playing at Haverfest really stood out. Okay, so the first one wasn’t exactly Weezer, but the Blue Album Group brought Weezer fans from all over Haverford, from as far as HCA and 710 College Avenue, to Founders Green. While I love the generic FUCS bands that most people have never heard of, the Blue Album Group showed how awesome shows at Haverford can be when they target the mainstream audience.
They played Weezer’s self-titled “blue album” in its entirety without altering the order and got fans screaming lyrics and dancing. It was as though Weezer had actually come to campus. This was clearly the highest energy part of the day before things moved into Founders. At the height of the show, during “Say It Ain’t So,” I could already hear voices cracking. In unison: “Say it ain’t so / Your drug is a heartbreaker / Say it ain’t so / My love is a lifetaker.”
Finally, the Blue Album Group played “Only In Dreams” to an exhausted but still energetic crowd. They must have lost their voices for at least a few hours afterwards. I know I was still hoarse on Haverfest Day Two.
Now don’t get me wrong, White Williams and Atlas Sound are more “my kind of music” than Weezer. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy a concert where everyone can get into the music, even if they’re just watching a cover band. FUCS should seriously considering booking more bands like this in the future if they want to whittle away at their elitist image. Perhaps the next one could be in Lunt Basement.
But Wale’s performance was by far the finest show of Haverfest.
D.C.-based go go artist Wale, along with a full band, tore up Founders. He also brought us a genre that has been largely left out of concerts booked at Haverford: quality go go and hip-hop. Those are hard to come by if you want a concert on Haverford’s campus. Furthermore, we finally got some music from the great and musically talented city of Washington, D.C.
The show was dominated by regional pride. In almost every one of his songs, Wale mentions “the city,” or D.C., Maryland, Virginia (or at least the acronym DMV). The show ended with Wale’s MC listening to where Haverford students are from and explaining to them that Washington, D.C. is the best city in the country.
There was great music, dancing, and even moshing for those present. Thank you FUCS and praise go go music.
